Mamink Daeng Tata’

“As someone who was born and raised in Sulawesi, I reckon its Coto Makassar (Makassar beef soup) is the best I’ve ever tasted.”

Daeng Tata – who is originally from Makassar, South Sulawesi – initially played around with the idea of opening a restaurant in the capital city during his frequent business trips to Jakarta back in the late ‘80s. The thought crossed his mind after he saw not even one out of the plethora of eateries across Jakarta served the signature cuisine from his hometown. By 1993, with help from three of his family members, Daeng mustered up the courage to make his ancestors proud by selling Makassar food by setting up a small tent by the roadside of Jalan Supomo in Tebet.
Fast forward to 2005, and Mamink Daeng Tata’s business has prospered. An additional two outlets were opened since he first started out – another one Tebet and the other on Jalan Panjang. The latter, however, did not last long as it had to be closed down in 2008. “Due to the Busway lane on Jalan Panjang, traffic there has become even worse, which discouraged people to make a beeline to our place,” reasons Daeng Tata’s youngest son.
A total of 90 employees are on the payroll working at the two remaining joints, while Mamink Daeng Tata’s reputation for dishing out the best Makassar cuisine in town remains preserved. As someone who was born and raised in Sulawesi, I reckon its Coto Makassar (Makassar beef soup) is the best I’ve ever tasted. Its thick zesty soup – made from rice water and chock-full of beef chunks – is definitely one of a kind.
In my opinion, the three dishes that you must have here are the Tata Ribs, Sop Konro (Makassar beef ribs soup), and, of course, its Coto Makassar. To wrap up your meal, choose the Es Pallubutung (Makassar shaved ice dessert) or the Es Pisang Ijo (shaved ice with green banana).
