It has to be said that our roadside delicacies are one of the shining lights in the culinary world of Indonesia. Jakarta has them in abundance and discounting the pros and cons regarding their hygiene levels, we have to admit that they are indeed delicious. Here are a few joints that you should consider paying a visit to, including some legendary ones.
Sate Apjay
The star amongst the food vendors in Panglima Polim has been around since the 1970s. The well-seasoned chicken meat on its satay and its near-perfect grilling process lends an appetising touch that will leave a mark on one’s palate.
Jl. Panglima Polim IX (across Apotik Jaya),
South Jakarta
Open daily from 5pm-2am
Nasi Goreng dan Bubur Ayam Bang Roby
Not many may be familiar with this place – I only knew about it not too long ago. Offering a diverse selection of Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and Bubur Ayam (chicken porridge), this tented warung was first established in 1990 and has been in business on Jalan Sabang since 1998.
Jl. Sabang, Menteng (across Robinson Department Store),
Central Jakarta

Open daily from 5pm-2am
Sate Padang Ajo Ramon
With only a pushcart and a tent in its arsenal, Sate Padang Ajo Ramon is a long-standing tented warung set in the Pasar Santa area that has legions of fans. Its success has led to the business’ expansion with the opening of another joint on Jalan Cikajang. Simply the best of its kind.
Jl. Cikajang No. 72,
South Jakarta
T: 0852 1337 1999
Open daily from 11am-12am
Nasi Goreng Kebon Sirih
It’s a common sight to see a long line of cars parked by the roadside on Jalan Kebon Sirih and a sidewalk crammed with Jakarta’s army of food enthusiasts. Never in my life have I ever seen Nasi Goreng Kebon Sirih devoid of customers. Its tender and odourless mutton meat is the best part of its savoury and much-seasoned fried rice.
Jl. Kebon Sirih,
Central Jakarta
pen daily from 4pm-3am
Bubur Ayam Barito
The two wooden tables that sit on the pavement is all that Bubur Ayam Barito has to offer, yet it is packed with customers even into the dead of night. Its lack of seating space means that those who do not get a place to sit tend end up tucking into its tantalising Bubur Ayam within the not-so- comfort of their own cars.
Jl. Gandaria Tengah No. 3,
South Jakarta
T: 0813 8148 8989
Open daily from 4pm-12am
Bakmi Jhon
Did you know that the modest pushcart hawker that is Bakmi Jhon could sell up to around 800 bowls of noodles per day? Located on Jalan Sampit Satu in Melawai, there seems to be no end to the number of people visiting this joint. The secret behind its success lies in its use of fish sauce.
Jl. Sampit Satu, Melawai,
South Jakarta
T: 0812 991 2932
Open daily from 7.30am-3.30pm
Roti Bakar Eddy
One of the biggest success stories in the world of roadside warung in Jakarta, Roti Bakar Eddy’s flagship shop is still located in the same place where it all began despite the opening of a number of branches that are housed in permanent buildings. I personally prefer to visit its original tented warung and reminisce about my teenage days.
Jl. Raden Patah No. 11,
South Jakarta
Open daily from 5pm-2am
